Firefall, Atlanta Rhythm Section & Orleans

Firefall

Firefall is an American country rock band that formed in Boulder, Colorado, in 1974. Their radio hits include “You Are the Woman”, “Just Remember I Love You”, “Strange Way”, “Cinderella”, “Headed for a Fall”, and “Staying with It”. 50 years after their debut, founder Jock Bartley and the gang are still going strong, touring the world and bringing their music to the fans. The band was founded by Rick Roberts, former member of the Flying Burrito Brothers, and Jock Bartley, who had been Tommy Bolin’s replacement in Zephyr. Other members have included Mark Andes, Larry Burnett, David Muse, and Michael Clarke, the latter also formerly of the Flying Burrito Brothers and an original member of the Byrds.

The band released Comet, their first new album in nearly 20 years, and first with Sunset Blvd Records, on December 11, 2020. The album featured a lineup of Jock Bartley, Mark Andes, David Muse, Sandy Ficca and Gary Jones. In 2021 Firefall again did some shows as a trio, this time with Bartley, Jones and a returning Steve Weinmeister on bass, who ended up returning to the group to replace Jones going forward. In 2022 David Muse was sidelined from touring after having once again fallen ill with cancer, that this time took his life on August 6, 2022. Jim Waddell, who had first played with Firefall in 1993, returned to cover for Muse. In July 2022 after Mark Andes retired from the road, current Babys singer/bassist John Bisaha joined the lineup. In 2025 Firefall released  their latest album, Friends & Family 2, featuring new interpretations of classic songs from other 1970s bands, including Dan Fogelberg, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Kenny Loggins, Eddie Money, Little River Band and more. It was released on May 23.

Atlanta Rhythm Section

Atlanta Rhythm Section... ARS... In the annals of rock and roll, where do they fit?  They’ve been part of the Southern Rock Scene for over 50 years.  Their biggest hits include “So Into You,” “Champagne  Jam,” “Imaginary Lover,” “Spooky,” and “Alien” to name a few.  But there’s so much more.  With 15 albums of outstanding songwriting and performances.  ARS represents the good things the phrase “Classic Rock” implies.

Often described as a more radio-friendly version of Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Allman Brothers, ARS was one of many Southern Rock bands to hit the upper reaches of the charts durning the late ‘70s.  Hailing from the Atlanta suburb of Doraville, the beginning of ARS can be traced back to 1970 when the remnants of two groups (the Candymen and the Classics IV) became the preeminent backing band for all Atlanta recordings.  After landing a number of “hit records” as a backing band, this group of journeyman musicians decided to become a real band, leading to the formation of ARS.

In January 1978 ARS released what would turn out to be its most successful album, Champagne Jam, which led off with the song "Large Time", a tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd, some of whom had lost their lives in a plane crash the previous October. Champagne Jam became their biggest-selling album, selling over a million and certified platinum. The album provided two more hits for the band, "Imaginary Lover" (#7)  and "I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight" (#14).

On June 24, 1978, the band appeared at the Knebworth Festival in Knebworth, England before a crowd of 60,000 on a bill that included Genesis, Jefferson Starship, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Brand X, Devo and Roy Harper.

On July 1, 1978, the band played before more than 80,000 at Texxas Jam at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, with various other artists including Walter Egan, Van Halen, Eddie Money, Head East, Journey, Heart, Ted Nugent and Aerosmith. On August 26, 1978, it was Canada Jam at Mosport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, before their largest audience yet (over 110,000) with the Doobie Brothers and the Commodores, among others. The following week, ARS had a rock festival of their own, Champagne Jam, at Grant Field at Georgia Tech on September 3, 1978, which also included Santana, the Doobie Brothers and Eddie Money.

Today the band lead by Co-founding member Rodney Justo, tours the world keeping the spirit of ARS alive.

ORLEANS

Orleans is best known as the Pop/Rock band that brought you the classic 70s hits “Still The One”, “Dance With Me” and “Love Takes Time”. Now in its 53rd year, Orleans has produced a body of work spanning 17+ albums and 4 DVDs.

Orleans found its core audience touring the clubs and college circuit of the Northeastern United States, crossing paths with other up-and-comers such as Bonnie Raitt, Tom Waits and Hall & Oates. Rolling Stone magazine called Orleans "the best unrecorded band in America". Showcase performances in New York led to a recording contract with ABC Dunhill Records and the release of the self-titled debut album in the fall of 1973, which had been recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama with producers Roger Hawkins and Barry Beckett at the helm.

The group's second record, Orleans II recorded at Bearsville Studios, was originally released in Europe in 1974 but ABC declined to release it in the US since management felt there were "no hit singles" on the album (despite the fact that it contained the first-version recordings of both "Let There Be Music" and "Dance With Me") and dropped the group from the label. After the band's later successes, Orleans II was finally put out in America in 1978, combined with the first album as a double LP called Before the Dance. It was also released as a CD in Japan later on in the 1990s under its originally slated title Dance With Me.

In the meantime, the group was back to showcasing for a new record deal. When Orleans was heard at Max's Kansas City, they were signed and produced by Chuck Plotkin, then head of A&R for Asylum Records. The band then scored its first Billboard Hot 100 charting single "Let There Be Music" (No. 55), taken from their third album, Let There Be Music, released in March 1975.

The follow-up single, "Dance With Me" (reshaped and re-recorded from Orleans II with Plotkin at the helm), went to No. 6 on the pop charts and the band became part of mainstream of American pop music. Atypical of the high-energy, earthy, R&B and Rock n' Roll mix of styles they had been previously identified with, "Dance With Me" cast the band in a more "soft-rock" light and landed them a tour with Melissa Manchester.

While recording their next album, Waking and Dreaming, in early 1976, the group was joined by second drummer Jerry Marotta, freeing Wells Kelly to sing more and play keyboards.

"Still the One" (released in July 1976), from Waking and Dreaming, cemented Orleans' relationship with the American public. While the single peaked eventually at No. 5, the band was on a major cross-country ten-week tour with label-mate Jackson Browne, ending in November 1976.

In January 1977 the single was chosen as the theme song for the ABC television network (the parent of ABC Records) and has since been used for an endless number of commercials and movie soundtracks.

The band continues to be in demand for live performances, as they have been for the past 5 decades. Led by co-founder Lance Hoppen, brother and long-standing member Lane Hoppen with relative newcomers Brady Spencer, Tom Lane and Tony Hooper comprise the touring band, delivering the music of Orleans with power, class and integrity to appreciative audiences everywhere.
